Xuan writes a column for CAPE, a non-profit social network aiming at empowering Chinese youth;
Xuan shares her experiences, thoughts, and knowledge with Chinese peers on her personal blog;
As one of the first Chinese college students winning considerable scholarships from Semester At Sea, Xuan's writing on SAS has informed and encouraged dozens of Chinese students to enjoy this unparalleled education opportunity.

As one of the first Chinese college students winning considerable scholarships from Semester At Sea, Xuan's writing on SAS has informed and encouraged dozens of Chinese students to enjoy this unparalleled education opportunity.
Xuan holds a firm belief that life should be valued by giving rather than receiving. Therefore, she has been seeking ways to apply her education background and personal skills to real-world issues in order to serve the public good. For instance, she is very interested in higher education, youth empowerment, and cultural exchange:
She is serving on the Semester At Sea Youth Alumni Council as a previous Global Ambassador and a co-founded of Semester At Sea China Chapter;
She is a junior fellow of Harvard SEED on Citizenship and Social Innovation in China, a co-founder of its alumni association and a previous vice president;
She co-founded Si-Lu, a non-profit learning-by-traveling project;
She founded a reading & sharing club at Brown;
She is currently studying theory and practice on conflict resolution at Brown;
She also served as an assistant coordinator for Crimson Summer Exchange 2009 (Hangzhou), a team coordinator for “Revisiting Our Alma Mater” Volunteer Project, a student advisor for “Pace-Setter” Freshmen Training Project 2009, etc.

In the summer of 2012, Xuan 1) took an acting class (TAPS 0030) at Brown taught by Lowry Marshall; 2) developed her research project on Visual Perspective Taking, and 3) participated in the 8-day China Citizenship and Social Innovation SEED Camp at Harvard Kennedy School. Xuan has been awarded a packet of $15,500 from the Institute of Shipboard Education, which contains several prestigious scholarships and grants. She is going to sail around the world on Semester At Sea from January to April, 2011! (Oct. 23, 2010)

Xuan Zhao is a third-year Ph.D. student in Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences (CLPS), Brown University. She was born in Xingtai, China, and studied in Chu Kochen Honors College and Department of Psychology at Zhejiang University from 2007 to 2011.
Passion for Science:
Xuan's research focuses on social cognition, which combines cognitive science with social psychology to investigate human mind and behaviors in social contexts. Intrigued by questions such as "how do people understand other's mind", "when do people take other's viewpoints into account", and general topics such as "the dynamics of social interaction", she is conducting empirical studies under the supervision of Bertram Malle at Social Cognitive Science Research Center at Brown University. She is also a teaching assistant for social psychology, statistics, and introduction to cognitive science, and a graduate student advisor for directed undergraduate research.
Her research interests (now and near future) include:

Definitely talk to her if you know a way to bridge science and service, theory and practice!

- Conflict resolution, positive psychology, play therapy, education and human development, social entrepreneurship, conservation and promotion of Chinese culture.
