- Xuan has been working with amazing improvisers at the Second City to develop executive training workshops at the Second Science Project. The workshop she recently developed with Heather Caruso, Anne Libera, and Piero Pracaccini, "Inclusion in Practice", was delivered to 48 executives from Workiva through Booth Executive Education program. Integrating improvisational practices and research insights, this workshop introduces practical approaches with which people can benefit from disagreement and dissimilarity, even where tensions typically take social interactions off-track. Providing an alternative to typical avoidant approaches to conflict, this session draws attention to the value in candid communication and constructive disagreement.

The player would control the role of a merchant from Europe who, in order to achieve financial success and social harmony, made great efforts to understand and appreciate different perspectives of members of the local tribe and of other European settlers. Needless to say, she will keep exploring creative ways to connect social psychology with cognitive development, improvisation/acting, and leadership! (May 2, 2014) - Xuan's prelim paper ("Towards an Integrative Understanding of Visual Perspective Taking: An Activation Approach") is passed by her prelim committee (Bertram Malle, Fiery Cushman, Joo-Hyun Song) on the first round! Two major arguments this paper made: first, people can be egocentric and altercentric simultaneously; second, instead of asking "whether perspective taking is automatic", we should investigate stimulus conditions and task contexts that give rise to various signatures of VPT. (Arp 10, 2014) - Xuan presented her poster "Altercentrism? Spontaneous perspective taking biases one’s own spatial judgments" at the 15th Annual Meeting of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology in Austin, TX! This SPSP conference was a very eye-opening and motivating learning experience for her. (Feb 28, 2014) |
